Sex and Community – What This Is All About

I have decided to start a blog. Originally this idea seemed silly to me – I mean how many websites can we really dedicate to ourselves, right? But I have come to realize, with a few good pushes from my more tech aware friends, that a blog can be more like joining a conversation than yelling into the wide and fuzzy idea of the internet.

So here I am! And I would like to join the conversation!

To start with here is a little about me: I am currently a graduate student studying human sexuality education. I live in Philadelphia and am surrounded by some of the best sex geeks one could hope for! I work occasionally observing and teaching sex and sexuality classes, am starting a new guest column on sex and spirituality, and otherwise spend most of my time in a library or in front of a book (the rock star life of a grad student). Before this I got my undergraduate degree in community development and have been spent some time trying to figure out what that meant. The more that I am learning about sexuality education the more I believe a community around sexuality is important for everyone. What could be more core than your sexuality? I don’t mean just sex or orientation, though those are important. I also mean gender, intimacy, love, connection, identity, health, relationships, communication….sexuality is in everything – it is basic to who we are, especially the greatest parts of who we are. That, to me, seems like the best place to start building community.

So that is what my blog is looking to do – explore some of the amazing places where community and sexuality intersect. Because, really, that is where the best sexuality education is really happening. I will post whatever I can find that relates, seems relevant, or just seems somehow worthwhile.

XOXO
